Explore London’s Exciting Early History

Any tour of London has to include some of the most prominent and historical locations in the city. The Tower of London, built in 1078, has seen many uses over the years. Initially, it was part of the White Tower complex, which included other buildings and several moats. When it was built, the Tower was meant to be a fortress, holding political and other high-profile prisoners throughout some of Britain’s most tumultuous years. Since 1303, the Tower has held the Crown Jewels of England, protected by armed guards in a specially designated Jewel House. The other parts of the Tower are available to tour throughout the year. In addition to exploring the buildings, the tours – given by knowledgeable and entertaining Yeoman Warders - feature reenactments and educational opportunities that will delight visitors of all ages.

Built around the same time as the Tower, Westminster Abbey was the site of many coronation ceremonies for the British Monarchy. Properly known as Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, Westminster Abbey has seen many additions and renovations through the years. As with many major religious sites, monarchs would add to or improve the building; the resulting changes have left a fascinating history of London built into this magnificent structure. In addition to the large and beautiful Abbey building, the Abbey complex also features a museum located underneath the building and offers lucky visitors the chance to hear the famous Choir of Westminster Abbey perform. The Abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and can be visited for a small fee.

If you want to enjoy some of the best fun and spectacle that London has to offer, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is a must-see. There are also other attractions available in and around the Palace grounds that vary throughout the year; if you’re looking to catch a particular exhibit, be sure that you are planning to go during the right season.

Fun and Education at London Museums

As a center of learning and culture for hundreds of years, it is no surprise that London has so many museums, and that so many of them are free for the public (special exhibitions will still require tickets.) Visitors love the British Museum, a public museum that showcases art from around the world, spanning the ages from the prehistoric to modern. The British Museum is home to such famous objects as the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon sculptures, and is free to enter. Visitors need only pay for the exhibits.

Alongside the river Thames, visitors will find the striking Tate Modern museum. Dedicated to modern art from celebrated artists like Picasso, the Tate also displays paintings and innovative art from contemporary artists. For visitors with more classical tastes, the National Gallery won’t disappoint. Vermeer, Rembrandt, da Vinci and Boticelli works are all on display here, interspersed with other beautiful paintings from less famous Renaissance and Baroque painters.

For visitors who love the thrill of discovery, the Science Museum is a tribute to 300 years of innovation. There is no other museum quite like it in the world; there are more than 40 different galleries in the museum, all filled with hands-on exhibits that engage and entertain visitors while being very educational. This museum is a true experience to delight all the senses. From futuristic displays to IMAX cinema and virtual reality, the Science Museum is guaranteed to be a good time for all.

After visiting the Science Museum, tours often choose to explore the fantastic historical panorama presented at the National Maritime Museum, or spend time visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum. Known as the V&A, the Victoria & Albert Museum is dedicated to artifacts from some of the world’s most opulent cultures. There are heirlooms from British colonies around the globe, including fine ceramics and china, art objects including furniture and textiles, fashion and jewelry, in addition to more traditional art such as photos, sculptures, and paintings.

Uniquely London Entertainment

No matter what brings you to London, no trip would be complete without a visit to the London Eye. This modern observation wheel is the tallest in the world, offering unsurpassed views across the city of London. There is no better way to get a sense of the full scope that the city encompasses, and it only takes 30 minutes, leaving plenty of time for your next destination: Madame Tussauds house of wax. At Madame Tussauds you’ll get to pose with wax doubles of some of the most famous men and women alive. There are pop stars and Hollywood icons, famous characters and well known political figures.

In addition to all these attractions, London has a thriving cultural scene. You’ll want time to savor the atmosphere of this cosmopolitan city, shopping, dining, and enjoying yourself. You may want to check out the pub scene or the nightlife, both readily accessible throughout London.
